Can I change the speed of the cat exercise wheel?Updated 2 months ago
If you have an older model (Gen 1-6), the speed of the wheel can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the bolts that hold the inline wheels on the base. Tightening the bolts will increase resistance and slow the wheel down; loosening the bolts reduces resistance and allows the wheel to spin faster and more easily. To adjust bolt tightness, you'll need a 5.5 mm hex key, and you'll want to try and adjust all four bolts about the same amount to keep things balanced.
Take care not to overtighten the bolts, however. If the inline wheels cannot roll smoothly, they may put so much resistance on the big wheel that they force it off the track. Always test the roll of your wheel by hand before allowing your cats to use it, just to make sure there won't be any issues.
If you have a Gen 7 wheel, these ones cannot be adjusted as the wheels are held in place by pins, with no nuts or bolts that can be tightened or loosened. This ensures a good, smooth roll for the wheel and eliminates any user error that can come from adjusting the bolts. Unfortunately, the trade off for this streamlined design is that the speed cannot be modified at all.
